Day 105: Heat

June 05, 2018 by Vanessa Young in The Writing

Write about being overheated and sweltering.

In the fire ring, thinking only gets you killed. You think too hard about what you're gonna do? BOOM. You're dead. Try to anticipate your next move? BOOM. You're dead. No thinking, just doing.

Contestant #4 stood with her back to the wall of flames that surrounded the remaining 10 contestants, exhausted and waiting impatiently for the next round to start.

The last round took out 6 contestants, all of whom were only selected specifically because they weren't prepared. Gotta give the bloodthirsty audience something to screech about.

Sweat was racing down #4's back as she squared her shoulders. The bell tolled and the contestants began frantically running across the circle on their allotted paths.

The "game" part was simply to not fall into the cracks that broke up each contestants' personal path. They had to haphazardly jump from one block to the other without falling in between. If the fall didn't kill them, the lava lurking under the blocks most assuredly would.

#4 expertly made her way from block to block, ignoring the cries of contestant #7, who just got a fireball lobbed at her. Unfortunately, contestant #2 was paying too much attention and tripped over his next block, toppling out of sight.

His screams would haunt #4 for the rest of her life.
