Day 128: The Promise

Write about a promise you’ve made to someone. Did you keep that promise?

Mia stood slightly behind the crowd of mourners, in the shade. The pastor was finishing up his sermon as the people blew their noses and wiped their tears. A baby cried softly in its stroller. The sun overhead was beating down harshly on the mourners covered in black attire.

"In the name of His son, amen," the pastor bellowed. The crowd murmured in unison.

The wind blew just then, providing mild relief from the relentless sun.

The crowd began to disperse. Mia slowly walked towards his grave. Hands in her pocket, face slightly covered by a large black hat, she wasn't noticed by anyone in the crowd.

His wife wandered past, carrying their 8 month old child. She looked despondent, harassed, ready for oblivion.

Mia swallowed a smirk. She was standing right above his grave now. The diggers were filling the freshly dug grave with dirt. She stayed until they completed their task. She stayed until the last of the crowd left. She stayed until the sun went down.

The wind blew her curls about her face. She brushed them aside, leaning down to his tombstone.

She whispered, "I kept my promise, you son of a bitch. I told you I'd be the one to exterminate you."

Mia pulled out a flask from inside her jacket and took a hearty swig.

"I hope hell is your worst nightmare."
