Day 39: Coffee and Tea

Surely you drink one or the other or know someone who does- write about it!

The two women sat across from each other at this cute, quaint little coffee shop tucked into a gentrified neighborhood. Their strained smiles and forced laughter was for the benefit of the people watching them. They had to figure a way out of this without alerting them.

"Welcome to the Brewtique Café, ladies! What can I get ya?" The sweet waiter asked.

One woman, chic afro pushed back with a scarf and permanent henna on her hands, asked for coffee black and to "keep them coming." She had a feeling they would be here awhile.

The other woman, buzzed head and a rather large septum ring, asked for a green tea with honey.

"Sounds good and are we thinking food today?"

Both women shook their heads.

The waiter walked away and they went back to looking at each other and pretending to be casual. The sunny day had turned cloudy and she could smell the rain coming when she walked in. That'll make things harder when they attempt to flee. No one can drive properly when it rains.

"So," the coffee drinker started. "Any plans for the rest of the day?"

The tea drinker shrugged. "I don't know anymore. It looks like it's going to rain, right? I was going to go for a run through the park. Maybe I'll just drive down to the lighthouse instead and take more photos. What about you?"

"Ugh, I need to finish this book cover I've been working on for months. I procrastinated too much," the coffee drinker responded.

"I know how that goes!" They both fake a laugh as the waiter comes back with their drinks.

She breathed her green tea in deep. It never failed to calm her nerves. She took a tentative sip and immediately regretted it. Her tongue was on fire.

The coffee drinker let out a genuine laugh at her struggle. "Maybe what I need is to work outside, I'm more inspired that way."

The green tea drinker nodded. "Come with me! It'll be nice. And I'll shoot some shots of you too." Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a man walk in. He looked extremely out of place. Dressed in black leather from head to toe and an ugly scar on his face. Wow, they weren't even trying to be stealth, huh?

The green tea drinker tilted her head slightly. The coffee drinker acknowledged the new coffee shop patron with a small nod of her head. They were here and more would be coming. They had to go.

By the time the new patron with the scar settled in his seat and looked at their table, all he saw were two cups, letting off steam; the women were nowhere to be found.
